Fraudsters were scraping executives’ public profiles and combining that data with generative AI (GenAI) to craft hyper-personalized emails that mimicked tone and structure and even referenced recent company news. What makes this so concerning is not just the scale. It is the fact that any curious person with basic prompts and a free AI tool could do the same kind of targeting. The barrier to entry — once guarded by technical skill, OSINT tools and credentialed data vendors — has collapsed. For executives and their security teams, the digital perimeter is no longer just servers and firewalls. The threat surface now extends into everyday LinkedIn posts, data brokers and accessible AI models. In this new world, defenders need to lean into the same tools attackers use to turn visibility into control. AI Puts Advanced Tactics in Amateur Hands Not long ago, launching a serious phishing or doxing operation required steep technical skill and access to expensive, credentialed data services. Only trained analysts and well-resourced adversaries could stitch together personal details from scattered databases and turn them into a viable attack. That barrier is eroding fast. Take phishing kits, for example. GenAI can now help an amateur create entire campaigns that mimic tone, structure and real company news. Imagine a message that looks like it came from your CFO, referencing an actual board meeting. The Department of Homeland Security recently warned that AI-assisted phishing kits are already generating “highly convincing emails that trick users into divulging sensitive information.” Moreover, consider doxing databases. In 2025, the ‘CEO Database’ incident exposed more than 1,000 companies and their executives. Subsequent analysis showed that the site had been built by an operator with little technical background who leaned heavily on AI to accelerate research and content generation. Anthropic has since documented similar patterns in its monthly misuse reports. It is the difference between needing a locksmith’s license and buying a lockpick kit at the corner store. The tools once reserved for specialists are now on the shelf for anyone who wants them. Exposure leads to vulnerabilities, and vulnerabilities impact risk. That simple chain matters most when the person exposed sits in the boardroom. When MGM Resorts was breached in 2023, attackers reportedly gained access through social engineering and then leaked company leaders’ sensitive data. The result was not just operational disruption but reputational harm, shareholder questions and lawsuits that stretched long after the initial incident. One weak point in an executive’s footprint became a business-level crisis. This pattern is likely to become more common with AI making personal information easier to discover and weaponize. A leaked address, phone number or family connection does not stay personal for long. It can distract leaders at critical moments, invite harassment and erode trust in the company’s ability to safeguard its own leadership. For security teams, the lesson is clear. Protecting the enterprise means protecting the individuals at the top, because once an executive becomes the target, the organization is already under attack. Flipping the Script: AI as a Defensive Tool However, AI doesn’t just lower the barrier for attackers. It also gives defenders a new way to see themselves through an adversary’s eyes.
