Why AISPM Isn’t Enough for the Agentic Era

AI agents have quietly crossed a threshold. They are no longer confined to drafting emails or summarizing documents, but are increasingly embedded in enterprise workflows, making decisions and taking action across business systems with limited or no human involvement. OpenAI reports that 79% of organizations now use AI agents in some form, spanning experimentation, pilots and production deployments. That level of adoption signals a shift from novelty to operational reality, and it exposes a growing disconnect between how agents behave and how security teams are prepared to manage them. We’ve Been Here Before Security posture management has always evolved to address emerging computing paradigms. Cloud security posture management (CSPM) arose to address misconfigurations in cloud environments. Application security posture management (ASPM) followed DevOps acceleration, protecting rapidly changing software. Data security posture management (DSPM) focused on sensitive data flows and identity security posture management (ISPM) managed the proliferation of human and machine identities. More recently, AI security posture management (AISPM) has emerged to secure models, data sets, prompts and retrieval-augmented generation workflows. Each discipline solved the most visible risks of its era but left blind spots, and now autonomous agents are widening those gaps. The Limits of AISPM AISPM has quickly become the default response to AI risk. Most implementations focus on models, data sets, prompts and retrieval pipelines, ensuring models are trained safely, inputs are validated and outputs do not leak sensitive information. These controls are important, but they are grounded in an outdated mental model: AI systems produce outputs for humans to review and act upon. However, agents already aren’t stopping at outputs. They’re acting, querying systems, calling APIs, modifying records, triggering workflows and chaining tools together dynamically based on context. From a security perspective, the risk no longer lives in the model itself, but in what happens after the model reasons about a task and begins executing it. Risk Emerges at Runtime Agentic risk is not static, it emerges in motion, often across multiple systems and decisions. An agent may access a CRM, pull data from a billing platform, enrich it with internal analytics and send the result to an external service — all within seconds. Each individual action may appear legitimate when viewed in isolation; however, the risk lies in the sequence, intent and scope of the combined behavior. Traditional posture management tools are poorly suited to this new reality. They are designed to assess configurations at rest, not decisions in flight. By the time an alert fires, the agent may have already completed its task, leaving security teams reconstructing intent after the fact. Compounding the problem, agents are often fleeting. They spin up dynamically, inherit credentials, complete a task and disappear. Without persistent identity, organizations cannot reliably answer basic questions: How many agents are active? What systems can they access? Which actions were authorized, and which were improvised? Existing identity frameworks assume predictable actors — humans with roles or service accounts with narrow, predefined functions. Agents don’t fit either category. They are goal-driven, adaptive and capable of reasoning beyond explicit instructions. Treating them as just another workload or service account creates blind spots that grow larger as autonomy increases. Real Exposure, not Hypothetical Risk These gaps are no longer theoretical as organizations are already deploying agents to accelerate sales cycles, manage infrastructure, respond to incidents and automate customer interactions. In many cases, agents aggregate sensitive data across systems and environments to complete their objectives. When that data moves beyond its intended boundary, whether through tool chaining, external integrations or misinterpreted goals, the resulting exposure is difficult to trace and even harder to prevent with model-centric controls alone. What fails in these scenarios is not AI alignment or prompt hygiene, but governance over autonomous action. Security teams now face a familiar inflection point. Just as cloud resources forced a rethink of infrastructure security and identities reshaped access control, agents represent a new primitive that existing frameworks cannot stretch to accommodate. They are not just AI models, and they are not just identities. They are autonomous actors operating across systems and making critical decisions. This reality exposes a structural gap between AISPM, which governs models, and IAM, which governs credentials. Neither addresses how autonomous decisions are authorized, constrained or audited as they unfold. Moving Toward Agentic SPM Agentic SPM is emerging in response to this structural gap. Rather than focusing solely on models or static permissions, it centers governance on the agent itself. This shift begins with continuous discovery, recognizing that agents may be created dynamically by frameworks, orchestration layers or even other agents and may only exist briefly. Without automated discovery, these actors remain invisible by design. With Agentic SPM, enforcement moves from static configuration checks to runtime decision control. Instead of discovering risk after execution through logs and alerts, it enables preventative controls that evaluate actions and tool chains before they occur. This allows organizations to limit escalation, constrain data movement and interrupt harmful sequences in real-time. Just as importantly, it preserves decision context and action trails, providing the auditability that regulators, boards and customers will increasingly demand as autonomous systems become embedded in critical workflows. The Question CISOs Must Answer AI agents are already embedded across enterprise environments, often faster than security teams realize. The question is no longer whether agents exist, but whether organizations can see them clearly enough to govern them effectively. Those that continue to rely solely on model-centric controls may find themselves managing yesterday’s risks, while autonomy introduces a new class of exposure in plain sight. In the agentic era, model security is no longer the differentiator, it’s the baseline. What matters now is whether organizations can govern autonomous decision-making before it governs them.
