Earlier this week, a digital assault affected various services in the urban area of Cleveland. Efforts are underway to restore the affected systems.

Monday saw an announcement from the urban area of Cleveland, revealing that it was targeted by a digital assault, leading to the temporary deactivation of certain systems to mitigate the threat.

Restoration of impacted services is still in progress. It was highlighted that emergency and utility services remained unaffected. No confidential taxpayer data from the CCA or customer information from Public Utilities was compromised.

City Hall and Erieview will remain closed for the entire week, with only employees gaining access on June 12, 2024.

“Essential urban services continue to operate normally. Despite facing limitations in IT capabilities, teams responsible for public safety, public works, public utilities, and the airport are actively serving the residents of the urban area,” the urban area’s statement on X reads, the platform used to communicate updates regarding the incident to the residents.

The urban area of Cleveland, in collaboration with law enforcement and strategic partners, is conducting an investigation to ascertain the extent of the security breach.

The specifics of the attack have not been disclosed by the urban area; however, the shutdown of IT systems following the incident points towards a potential ransomware involvement. As of now, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
