A cyber breach impacts Japanese video platform Niconico

Niconico, the Japanese video-sharing platform, compelled to halt operations due to cybersecurity turmoil.
Niconico, a Japanese video-sharing platform, temporarily ceases its activities following a significant cyber onslaught on June 8, 2024.
“Due to the repercussions of an extensive cyber intrusion, Niconico has been offline since the early hours of June 8th,” states the official communication released by the company. “We deeply regret any inconvenience caused.”
As a response to the event, the corporation suspends various Niconico Family Services like Niconico Video, Niconico Live Broadcast, Niconico Channel, etc. They have also disabled logins for Niconico Account on external platforms.
“During the early hours of Saturday, June 8th, a malfunction was detected that impeded server access within our cluster. In light of this development, we promptly closed the affected servers to safeguard the data. Following an extensive internal review and inquiry conducted later that day, we have ascertained a high probability of being subject to a cyber onslaught,” according to a declaration by the firm.
The video service provider has axed or rescheduled content originally planned for airing between June 10th and June 16th.
The company is currently probing the security breach with the assistance of law enforcement and external professionals to gauge the extent of the harm incurred.
No conclusions have been drawn yet as to whether malicious actors have purloined any data from their systems.
The Japanese organization has refrained from disclosing the nature of the cyber intrusion faced; nevertheless, the hurdles experienced and the response process seem indicative of a ransomware infiltration.
