Google’s Chrome web browser held a 64.41% command of the global browser market share in January 2024. That means more users are working with Chrome in significantly more use cases: mobile, desktop and even business. Because of that, users of all types must employ Chrome with a measure of caution and intelligence. After all, most average users spend most of their PC and mobile time (for both work and entertainment) within a browser. And given that a majority of users are doing so in Chrome, it’s important to understand how to best use the browser.

This guide, written by Jack Wallen for TechRepublic Premium, will provide you with some of the most important tips (broken into two categories: Security and UI) for using Google’s Chrome web browser.

    SECURITY

Never assume your web browser is secure. In fact, the safest approach is to always assume it’s insecure. With that in mind, consider each of these tips crucial.

    Don’t save passwords

I know this goes against every instinct you have, but you should probably consider not allowing your browser to save your usernames and passwords. That’s a big ask, especially for those who have a very large list of services they use. But when you save those passwords, the possibility of those passwords getting stolen grows exponentially.

Instead of saving the passwords, make use of a password manager and then install the official add-on for that password manager. That way, every time you need to enter a password, you can let the tool do the heavy lifting. Making use of a password manager also allows you to use far more complex passwords than you would otherwise.
