Research: Extending corporate life of laptops by just one year can reduce harmful emissions by 25%

Extending the usual renewal period of laptops in a corporate setting may lead to a significant decrease in the ecological imprint of a workplace, as per recent sustainability research in the workplace. Experts noted that challenges in ensuring that older laptops meet the necessary Windows OS specifications and other cost-related factors might counteract these environmental benefits.

The recent Atos Sustainable Workplace study, released this week to offer guidance on enhancing corporate social responsibility, revealed that by renewing laptops every four years instead of three, companies can achieve a reduction of up to 25% in carbon emissions and associated pollutants without compromising device efficiency or user satisfaction.

Furthermore, by implementing what the report termed as “data-centric, condition-oriented device renewal paired with reprocessing,” companies can potentially extend the lifespan of laptops within an organization to eight to ten years.
