New Google PIN Feature Allows Chrome Users to Synchronize Passcodes Across Multiple Devices
Chrome unveiled a new feature, a Password Manager PIN, enabling users to synchronize their passcodes on various platforms including Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and Android.
According to Chrome product manager Chirag Desai, “To enhance security, this PIN ensures that passcodes are encrypted end-to-end and kept confidential even from Google itself.”
The default PIN consists of six digits, but users can opt for a longer alphanumeric PIN by choosing the “PIN options” feature.
This change is a departure from the previous method, where users were only able to store passcodes on the Google Password Manager exclusively on Android.
Previously, users needed to scan a QR code on the device where the passcodes were generated to use them on other platforms.
This recent update eliminates that extra step, simplifying the process for users to log in to online services using passcodes by just authenticating with their biometrics. Google stated that iOS support is on the horizon.
However, users must know either the Password Manager PIN or the screen lock password of their Android devices before utilizing passcodes on a new device.
Desai mentioned, “These recovery methods will enable secure access to stored passcodes and synchronization of new ones across your computers and Android devices.”
Google reported that over 400 million Google accounts have adopted passcodes as of May 2024 and subsequently introduced them to high-risk users via the Advanced Protection Program (APP) two months later, providing a phishing-resistant alternative. Source.
