A recent study by online learning platform Coursera has revealed that the United Kingdom ranks as the 25th most proficient country in terms of technical skills across Europe. The report highlights that the UK trails behind other digital pioneers in the region such as Germany, France, and Spain.
On a global scale, the UK has improved its standing, moving up to 45th place out of 109 countries from last year’s 64th position. Despite the government’s substantial investments in digital skills, the current ranking suggests that there may be a need to review and enhance ongoing efforts.
Although the UK lags in technical proficiency, Europe as a whole showcases strong capabilities. Switzerland claimed the top spot globally, with 17 European nations securing positions in the top 25. Specifically, Germany, France, and Spain secured notable ranks of 3rd, 5th, and 7th, respectively.
These insights stem from the 2024 Global Skills Report by Coursera, which draws insights from more than 148 million global online learners and additional metrics such as the Global Innovation Index, Labor Force Participation Rate, Human Capital Index, and GDP per capita.
One area where the UK may be falling short is the lower adoption of AI upskilling compared to the US and the global average over the past year. Donal McMahon, the Vice President of Data Science at job platform Indeed, noted earlier this year that companies worldwide are actively seeking employees proficient in AI and adaptable to new technologies.

In an email to TechRepublic, Nikolaz Foucaud, the Managing Director of EMEA at Coursera, emphasized the need for increased investments in upskilling across enterprises and government sectors to cultivate a globally competitive workforce.
He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between higher education institutions, government bodies, and the technology industry to address the evolving skill demands of the digital landscape. Failure to collaborate and invest adequately, he warned, could result in a further decline in technical skills proficiency.
