Apple eliminates VPN applications in Russia; here’s the next steps to take
Apple is just one element of a broader assault on VPN usage in Russia. The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlights that the prohibition is most likely aimed at constricting Russian citizens’ access to independent Russian and global media, as well as facilitating the security services in monitoring Russian citizens.
The MoD also highlights that in conjunction with cracking down on VPN applications circulated in Russia, state authorities have instructed telecom providers to discontinue support for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony services.
It forms a sequence of suppression, supervision, and degradation of communication that has been ongoing in Russia even prior to the Ukraine invasion. “Despite a dwindling number of VPNs still accessible in the Russian App Store, the pool of high-quality services is decreasing, which in turn reduces their effectiveness as they lack the advanced traffic concealment provided by larger brands,” as stated by Migliano.
