US instructs TSMC to stop exporting cutting-edge semiconductor technology to China

In a notable escalation of US actions to control China’s acquisition of advanced technology, reports indicate that the Department of Commerce has ordered Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to discontinue the supply of high-performance artificial intelligence chips to Chinese clients.

This order, effective starting from Monday, imposes limits on the export of TSMC’s 7-nanometer and more sophisticated processors, which have widespread use in artificial intelligence applications as per Reuters.

The recent action by the US Commerce Department is specifically aimed at chips capable of driving AI accelerators and GPUs, emphasizing the cessation of indirect access to restricted technology for Chinese firms such as Huawei, which the US views as a threat to national security.
