UK ends Apple and Google app store scrutiny, but not for long

Google has granted developers the freedom to explore different payment options beyond the conventional methods. Resembling Apple’s initiatives in the European Union, Google’s suggestions incorporate a fee structure and notification prompts alerting users when they opt for third-party payment gateways.

The concept of open competition appears to be an unavoidable reality.

Although the CMA has yet to identify specific companies to scrutinize under potential SMS classification, it is improbable that industry giants like Apple, Google, or other tech behemoths can evade investigation.

Furthermore, the regulatory body indicates that it plans to “capitalize on its past research, particularly in sectors like mobile ecosystems, including app distribution,” as it embarks on its initial steps under the revised digital market competition framework. (Italics added)
