UK ends Apple and Google app store scrutiny, but not for long

Google provided app developers with additional leeway in utilizing alternative payment methods. These were akin to the propositions made by Apple within the European Union. Google’s suggestions encompassed a fee and notification pop-ups to alert users before engaging with a third-party payment system.

The inevitability of open markets

Although the CMA has not specified the companies that could face scrutiny for potential SMS categorization, it is improbable that Apple, Google, or other prominent technology enterprises can evade it.

Ultimately, the regulator indicated that it foresees its initial actions within the newly established digital market competition framework drawing upon and benefiting from its experiences in domains it has previously explored, such as mobile ecosystems, inclusive of app stores. (Italics mine.)
