Sanctions have been placed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on twelve individuals occupying executive and senior leadership positions at Kaspersky Lab, in light of the ban imposed on the Russian company by the Commerce Department.
In response, Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian E. Nelson, stated that the action “highlights our dedication to safeguarding the authenticity of our cyber space and shielding our populace from hostile cyber threats.”
He added, “The U.S. government will act decisively to hold responsible those who support or enable such activities.”
It should be noted that the sanctions do not encompass Kaspersky Lab, its affiliates, or its CEO, Eugene Kaspersky, according to OFAC. The individuals facing sanctions include executives and senior leaders, and their roles are as follows –
- COO Andrei Gennadyevich Tikhonov
- Deputy CEO Daniil Sergeyevich Borshchev
- CBDO Andrei Anatolyevich Efremov
- CLO Igor Gennadyevich Chekunov
- Vice President Andrey Petrovich Dukhvalov
- Head of Business Unit Andrei Anatolyevich Suvorov
- Corporate Communications Head Denis Vladimirovich Zenkin
- Chief HR Officer Marina Mikhaylovna Alekseeva
- Consumer Business EVP Mikhail Yuryevich Gerber
- CTO Anton Mikhaylovich Ivanov
- Corporate Business EVP Kirill Aleksandrovich Astrakhan
- Managing Director Anna Vladimirovna Kulashova for Russia and the CIS
This action follows the decision made by the Commerce Department to ban Kaspersky from offering its software and security services in the United States effective July 20, 2024, citing concerns over national security. Additionally, the company has been included in the Entity List.
Russia has referred to the ban on Kaspersky software as a standard tactic by the United States to disrupt international competition with American products. Kaspersky has consistently denied any affiliation with the Russian government.
