Acquiring top DSPM firm will strengthen Proofpoint’s security platform focused on individuals to tackle various data security obstacles in today’s intricate data environment
SUNNYVALE, California, October 29, 2024 – Proofpoint Inc., a prominent cybersecurity and compliance corporation, has officially agreed to acquire Normalyze, a leading company in Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). The transaction is expected to finalize in November 2024, subject to standard closing terms.
Through this deal, Proofpoint will advance its security platform focused on individuals with Normalyze’s innovative AI-driven DSPM technology, enabling companies to detect, categorize, and safeguard data at scale in various data environments, while emphasizing the reduction of human-related security risks.
Managing Human Risk in the Cloud Era Driven by Data
As companies adopt AI and generative technologies for innovation, the human factor in data security has grown more crucial. The widespread utilization of AI platforms, Databases as a Service (DBaaS), and Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) practices has led to a complex network of interconnected data environments that security teams may find challenging to secure. This rapid technological growth has increased complexity and heightened the risks of mishandling data as development teams prioritize swift outcomes, often sidestepping crucial security protocols. With more data access granted to individuals and machines, gaps in oversight and control might arise without proper governance or monitoring from security teams.
This evolving scenario presents intricate hurdles in identifying, categorizing, and protecting data, heightening the risk of data breaches due to forgotten or misclassified data, as well as excessive access rights. In reality, recent studies from Enterprise Strategy Group disclose that over a quarter of companies are unaware of their sensitive data locations. By leveraging DSPM technology, companies can address the security gaps resulting from their teams’ interactions with complex data environments and minimize the overall vulnerability to data breaches.
“Currently, data is at risk due to human actions. Modern applications are rapidly evolving, managed by small developer teams working independently on microservices and various data sources, resulting in data explosion,” stated Mayank Choudhary, executive vice president and general manager, Data Security & Compliance at Proofpoint. “These modern applications are extensively interconnected, making it challenging for security teams to oversee the heterogeneous and ever-expanding data sprawl. By amalgamating Proofpoint’s distinguished security platform for individuals with Normalyze’s pioneering DPSM technology, we can equip our clients with comprehensive oversight and control of their data posture to effectively mitigate human risk throughout their organization.”
“Due to the swift growth of internally built cloud applications and the use of SaaS applications procured by non-IT teams, security teams are challenged with inconsistent oversight and control of their critical cloud data,” mentioned Ravi Ithal, cofounder and chief technology officer at Normalyze. “As data security becomes progressively challenging, our mission and technology are centered on aiding organizations secure their valued data, regardless of its location. By collaborating with Proofpoint, we aim to empower organizations in improving their data security stance, mitigating data breach risks from human errors, and prioritizing data loss threats.”
The Normalyze DSPM platform secures even the most intricate data environments by fusing insights into data, access, and risk. It simplifies interactions between data and security teams, enabling them to devise effective security and governance strategies tailored to the business’ requirements. The platform allows companies to:
- Identify and categorize data using AI: Normalyze’s AI-driven One-Pass Scanner™ uses AI to precisely identify and classify valuable and sensitive data at scale across a broad array of data environments. Scanning is conducted in situ to maintain data under IT supervision, comply with strict data protection regulations, and boost operational efficiency.
- Evaluate and prioritize risk: Risks are ranked based on impact and probability, offering an extensive and scalable view of risks. The DataValuator™ assigns a monetary value to data and identifies data repositories with the highest potential data loss impact. The Data Access Graph visualizes access and trust relationships to pinpoint human-related risks, while the Data Risk Navigator highlights possible attack paths leading to data breaches or losses.
- Resolve security and compliance issues: Actionable insights and detailed recommendations, integrated with alerts into service management platforms, aid teams in addressing vulnerabilities like excessive access permissions before they are exploited. The solution enhances compliance across over 500 benchmarks, ensuring robust adherence to data protection-related regulatory standards.
Normalyze’s in-situ scanning and quantified risk assessment distinguish it from other DSPM solutions, offering quick value realization while alleviating security and cost challenges. Normalyze also provides extensive coverage from on-premises to cloud and excels in human-focused risk mitigation. Upon the completion of the acquisition, Normalyze’s solutions are anticipated to be integrated into Proofpoint’s offerings.
Normalyze was recently recognized as a Cool Vendor in the 2024 Gartner Cool Vendors™ in Data Security. Click here to learn more.
