Once again, AI industry employees warn the tech could lead to ‘human extinction'

The note was also backed by AI expert Yoshua Bengio, prominent British-Canadian computer scientist and psychologist Geoffrey Hinton, and Computer Science professor at the University of California, Stuart Russell.

The recent message reflects a public statement issued in March 2023, where over 150 esteemed AI researchers and others urged genAI companies to subject their systems to independent assessments. The absence of which has raised concerns regarding fundamental safeguards. Subsequently, in the same month, over 1,000 individuals, including industry specialists, scientists, ethicists, and others, released an open letter cautioning against the potential “loss of control over our society” due to unregulated AI.

Furthermore, in a May 2023 public letter, numerous influential creators of the technology referred to its regulation as “a global imperative comparable to other risks on a societal scale such as pandemics and nuclear warfare.”
