Meta has secured a deal with Sage Geosystems to acquire up to 150 megawatts of geothermal power to fuel its US data centers. The initial phase of the project is slated for launch in 2027, as reported by Reuters. Meta claims this move will substantially boost the utilization of geothermal power within the United States.
Geothermal power, a renewable energy source, harnesses the heat stored in the earth’s crust, derived from the earth’s creation and the decomposition of radioactive substances.
The new arrangement forms part of Meta’s continuous endeavors to satisfy the growing energy requirements induced by the company’s significant investment in generative AI (genAI) technology, which consumes a considerable amount of energy. The financial specifics of the arrangement remained undisclosed.
