Issue with Windows 11 Media Update Halts Security Patch Downloads

Windows 11 Media Update Bug Stops Security Updates

Be cautious, administrators, if you utilize physical media for setting up Windows security patches, as Microsoft issued a warning on Dec. 24. The installation of the October or November 2024 updates for Windows 11, version 24H2 via a CD or USB flash drive might block the operating system from receiving future security patches.

How to avoid Windows 11 version 24H2 blocking security updates

The issue with the October or November 2024 update for Windows 11, version 24H2 arises only “when the media includes” the version launched between Oct. 8 and Nov. 12, as per Microsoft. Updates received via Microsoft Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website remain unaffected.

To skirt around the problem, Microsoft suggests skipping the October or November updates if you are installing new versions using physical media. Installing the December 2024 release – Windows 11, version 24H2 from Dec. 10 onwards – will avert the occurrence of this issue.

Microsoft mentioned that they are “actively working on a fix and will provide updates as soon as they are available.”
