Becoming the darling of the tech industry
In 1998, Microsoft encountered a significant dilemma of its own: The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against it for unlawfully leveraging its Windows monopoly to crush its rivals. The company was defeated in the legal battle, and a court ruled that the company should be divided. Following an appeal, in 2001 Microsoft and the Department of Justice reached a settlement agreement requiring Microsoft to disclose its code to other firms and permit non-Microsoft web browsers to have access to Windows.
It was merely a gentle reprimand. Nevertheless, the corporation spiraled downward as it was overly engrossed in defending itself rather than actively pursuing opportunities in the mobile sector, venturing into internet searches, concentrating on social networking, or delving into e-commerce.
