An infamous event etched in world history occurred on 28 February 2025 when Donald Trump and JD Vance verbally attacked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office. The United States is swiftly tarnishing its reputation and isolating itself from everyone except the world’s most oppressive rulers. Repairing the damage to the US’s credibility and standing could take decades, if it is repairable at all.
Bracing for the end of the US-centric international order post-World War II, we are witnessing a breakdown of global governance. As unruly nations seek to exploit the chaos, Europe must step forward and assume the leadership role that was once occupied by the US. The first step is wholeheartedly backing Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
While Europe may not possess the same military might as the US, it is far from weak. It boasts one of the world’s most powerful, seasoned, and innovative combined military forces. The Oval Office clash instigated by Trump and Vance should serve as the catalyst for Europe to rally together after years of stagnation. Europe has all the necessary resources to stand independently, support Ukraine, and deter Russia.
Furthermore, Trump’s disgraceful conduct is driving the US’s closest ally, Britain, towards closer ties with Europe, helping bridge the gap post-Brexit. It is rallying democratic forces and compelling political elites to awaken. Europe could soon see a moderate two-party ruling alliance in Germany and a committed democratic leadership in Austria. French President Emmanuel Macron is regaining popularity after a turbulent period.
With half a billion inhabitants and a GDP comparable to that of the US, Europe, though perhaps less innovative, is not as far behind as some experts suggest. By forming a coalition with Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea, Europe could bridge this gap quickly—especially now that Trump, Vance, and Elon Musk are dismantling the pillars of US power through their cultural shifts.
Besides imposing tariffs that burden US consumers, the Trump administration is launching an assault on immigrants—a historically unique source of US strength. Europe should seize this opportunity by welcoming the talented individuals being forced out of the US’s esteemed federal institutions.
Germany’s industrial sector is capable of arming the continent, while France and Britain’s nuclear capabilities can substitute for those of the US. The five major European nations and Britain currently boast stable and responsible governments, a stark contrast to the current leadership in Washington.
Poland plays a crucial role in shaping the future. Economic trends favor our continent. Our military is expanding, and we made prudent arms purchases in due time. Even Trump has refrained from criticizing us. The whole of Europe recognizes this. The French, though slightly envious, refer to it as the ‘Polish moment.’ Poland’s current leaders are among the most adept, respected, and determined statesmen globally.
During the recent Munich Security Conference, interactions with numerous US politicians, including those who are capitulating to Trump, like Senator Lindsey Graham, revealed a lack of self-assurance. Instead of voicing their genuine opinions, they debased themselves and echoed the Dear Leader’s rhetoric. It was a pitiful sight.
When asked backstage whether ‘we still have an alliance,’ the US’s envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, admitted to being uncertain. Power in Washington now revolves entirely around Trump. The so-called ‘adults in the room’ have vanished, leaving only subservient followers vying to echo their foolish master the loudest.
Historian Timothy Snyder aptly observed in a statement that 2025 is not about America’s viewpoints, but rather about Europe’s potential actions. Trump’s policies (if one can generously call them that) may yield short-term gains, but in the long run, the erosion of the US’s governance, the arbitrary tariffs, and the estrangement of allies will have enduring consequences.
This is a critical juncture to stand in solidarity with Ukraine. The treatment inflicted upon Zelensky was appalling and overtly applauded by Russia. Refusing to yield would not have yielded a more favorable outcome. This US administration has laid bare its allegiances. A similar scenario unfolded with the crucial minerals agreement that Trump’s advisors were coercing Ukraine to accept. The initial proposal resembled mafia-style extortion, prompting the rightful rejection by Zelensky. Subsequent negotiations led to a more equitable deal.
While a backlash from the American public against Trump and Vance’s reprehensible behavior may be expected, Europeans cannot afford to delay. Given Trump’s potential return to power, Americans will have their own significant challenges to contend with. It is incumbent upon Europeans to take control of our destiny.
