Google has invested additional funds in the startup in exchange for a non-exclusive license to its existing LLM technology.

As part of the agreement, Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who established Character.ai in 2021, are anticipated to transition to Google.

The rest of the team at Character.ai is likely to remain at the company, focusing on enhancing the startup’s offerings. Dominic Perella, the startup’s general counsel, is set to assume the position of interim CEO.
