Chinese researchers break RSA encryption with a quantum computer

The scientists didn’t just stop at RSA. They also targeted key algorithms of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), such as Present, Rectangle, and the Gift-64 block cipher.

“Our results demonstrate that D-Wave’s quantum technology can effectively breach encryption systems safeguarding sensitive data on a worldwide scale,” they highlighted in their study.

“Numerous cryptographic algorithms that businesses currently rely on, like RSA and ECC, are rooted in mathematical puzzles that are arduous for traditional computers to efficiently solve,” remarked Prabhjyot Kaur, a senior analyst at Everest Group. “Nevertheless, the emergence of quantum computing poses a threat to the security of these algorithms. The necessity for robust quantum-safe or post-quantum cryptographic solutions is becoming increasingly apparent as quantum computing progresses.”
