The augmented reality experience of Apple Vision Pro is created using pass-through video. Instead of perceiving the actual surroundings, you observe a video representation of it. Instead of your actual eyes, observers see an avatar of your eyes.
Apple needed considerable VR equipment to develop AR capabilities and intends to introduce AR glasses for spatial technology that resemble regular glasses. However, this technology is still a couple of years away, hence Apple’s AR direction hinges on VR equipment.
On the other hand, Meta appears very enthusiastic about AR glasses — possibly resembling Ray-Ban Meta glasses, but with spatial technology visuals. The enthusiasm for VR seems to be waning, as reflected in financial losses and cutbacks. Meta’s Reality Labs sector has incurred significant financial losses and let go of thousands of employees in recent years.
