A description of ‘Open Source AI’ is provided

In recent times, the concept of “Open Source AI” has been extensively utilized, however, its specific meaning has remained uncertain until now.

The initiative known as the Open Source Initiative (OSI) has put forth a suggested description that it anticipates the technology community will embrace. As per this fresh explanation, it pertains to AI systems that are constructed of elements that can be analyzed and researched. Furthermore, it should be viable to freely adapt the systems for any intention and distribute them to other users, as highlighted in the MIT Technology Review.

As per this criteria, the AI models created by Open AI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta would not fall under the category of “Open Source AI” since users are restricted from utilizing them as they wish.
