Mobile Phone Secrecy Measures for Border Crossings
There have been reports of stricter inspection of electronic devices at US border points. While I possess ample knowledge about securing computers, my expertise on safeguarding phones is limited.
Is there a simple method to eliminate data—such as files, images, etc.— from phones in a manner that renders it irretrievable? Does resetting a phone to its default settings erase data completely, or can it be recovered? Specifically, does the reset obliterate the previous encryption key, or merely disengage the password that allows access to said key? Upon phone reboot, do deleted files remain accessible?
We seek solutions for both iPhones and Android devices. Moreover, the global landscape is evolving into a more perilous environment for those resisting governmental authority.
