A recent announcement from VMware indicated that the virtualization firm’s hypervisor software, VMware Workstation and Fusion, will now be available at no cost for individuals, businesses, and educational institutions. This decision comes after VMware previously offered Workstation and Fusion as free only for personal usage, requiring a subscription for commercial purposes.
The complimentary versions will deliver the same features as the paid editions, although troubleshooting support will not be provided by Broadcom, the parent company of VMware. The prior paid editions, Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro, have been discontinued.
“If you are currently under a commercial agreement, you can be confident that the terms of the agreement will remain valid until completion,” expressed Himanshu Singh, Broadcom’s director of product marketing, in a blog update. “You will continue to receive complete assistance and support as outlined in your agreement.”
