VMware Explore Barcelona 2024: Tanzu Platform 10 Enters General Availability

During the Barcelona event of this year, VMware unveiled a variety of cloud solutions, such as the latest edition of the Tanzu DevSecOps system, data engine integrations, and novel edge devices.

A noteworthy update comes from Broadcom, announcing that 50 VMware Cloud Service Providers now provide data sovereignty solutions, which could be of interest to European tech service purchasers.

It was in November 2023 when Broadcom completed the acquisition of VMware.

Prashanth Shenoy, Broadcom’s CMO and vice president of Marketing, Cloud Platform, Infrastructure, and Solutions, shared in an official statement dated Oct. 31, expressing optimism about the progress since VMware became part of Broadcom. According to him, the organization is more streamlined, focused, executing effectively, and aligning with their innovation agenda.

Availability of VMware Tanzu Platform 10 on Nov. 27

Broadcom recently shared that the latest version of the Tanzu DevSecOps platform, VMware Tanzu Platform 10, will be officially launched on Nov. 27. Platform 10 marks the primary Tanzu release to accommodate self-managed, air-gapped settings. It offers support for both public and private cloud setups, along with tools for AI governance.

Purnima Padmanaban, the general manager of Broadcom, Inc.’s VMware Tanzu Division, mentioned that some client applications were sprawling across various Cloud Foundry infrastructures. This realization led VMware to introduce a new level of abstraction in Tanzu Platform 10, aiming to streamline management, enhance security, and enable governance specifically for those clients.

In the new release, generative AI applications will be visually represented in Tanzu similar to other Cloud Foundry apps. These applications can integrate with the VMware Private AI Foundation, offering GPU hosting through NVIDIA.

VMware Tanzu Platform 10 also features:

  • Use of Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) libraries within VMware Tanzu Spring.
  • Setup options for native data services.
  • Support for Helm-based COTS applications with advanced cluster management for containers on VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated.
  • A Kubernetes-based developer experience resembling Cloud Foundry for custom applications.

Enhancements for VMware Cloud Foundation with Tanzu Data Services

VMware’s newest service, Tanzu Data Services, will empower VMware Cloud Foundation customers with self-serving access to data engines like Postgres. The aim is to decrease wait times and workloads for private cloud managers by handling data consumption, administration, and assistance within VMware Cloud Foundation environments.

The supported data engines encompass Postgres, MySQL, RabbitMQ, and Valkey.

Tanzu Data Services are expected to launch in Broadcom’s first quarter of 2025, commencing in November that year.

VeloCloud Edge 4100 and 5100 Appliances Embrace Edge AI

With AI permeating enterprise software, VMware has rolled out fresh solutions for AI networking using VeloCloud.

Zeus Kerravala, the founder and primary analyst at ZK Research, mentioned in a Broadcom release that in recent times, the adoption of AI and AI workloads at the edge has gained momentum, necessitating proof of concepts and more edge deployments. He highlighted the challenge faced is ensuring the right technology aligns with the deployment destination to fuel such adoption.

Broadcom’s new line-up, aiming to simplify this complexity, includes:

  • Swift identification and prioritization of new edge AI applications through the innovative VeloRAIN framework. Broadcom asserts the capability to detect encrypted application traffic previously unresolvable by network optimization mechanisms.
  • Dynamic Application-Based Slicing facilitating user sorting based on identity and traits, driving enhanced prioritization.
  • Enhanced quality of service for networking via 5G or satellite leveraging VeloRAIN.

VeloCloud Edge 4100 and 5100 appliances are engineered to augment network and security services, requiring fewer devices to better support edge workloads, including AI at the edge. These latest appliances and the fresh VeloRAIN structure are set to launch in Broadcom’s Q1 which kicked off on Nov. 4.

Broadcom Integrates Generative AI into Its Security Suite

Adding to its VMware vDefend threat intelligence tool suite, Broadcom has included generative AI. The vDefend Intelligent Assist is geared to contribute towards threat identification, analysis, and resolution.

Lastly, VMware Avi Load Balancer was fine-tuned to “enhance load balancing for VCF and Kubernetes setups, aiming at automating, reinforcing, and future-proofing operations,” as per the details shared in the Broadcom announcement. Both are scheduled for general release on Nov. 5.
