TSMC: US facility outperforms Taiwan in chip production efficiency

As of now, the CHIPS Act has earmarked over $32 billion in proposed funds for 18 firms, spanning 16 states and 26 initiatives. Nevertheless, based on information from the US Department of Commerce, no CHIPS funding has been distributed to any companies so far.

TSMC serves as the key chip provider for both Nvidia and Apple. With the CHIPS Act assigning $6.6 billion in subsidies and $5 billion in credits, in addition to a 25% tax deduction, to encourage the corporation to establish three manufacturing plants in Arizona. Although TSMC’s primary facility was slated to commence operations this year, the company decided to postpone it till next year due to labor scarcities.

The initiatives to bring back operations to the US are transpiring at a juncture when the sector is severely lacking in the workforce — encompassing technicians, software engineers, and specialists — essential to meet future requirements. As per evaluations, there could be a deficit of between 59,000 and 146,000 workers in the US semiconductor sector by 2029. A minimum of 50,000 skilled semiconductor engineers will be necessary in the US over the following years to cater to the burgeoning and pressing demand, as per a research conducted by Purdue University.
