Microsoft to release AI feature Recall in October for Windows Insiders

Issues are emerging from two different perspectives. The primary concern is that it is set to be operational by default, as announced initially, and could capture and retain user data without acquiring explicit consent. The secondary issue involves the exposure of sensitive information such as passwords or financial data that might be visible on the screen.

Manufacturers of devices are eager to showcase that users have the capability to utilize AI models on their local PCs, eliminating the requirement for cloud-based services provided by companies like OpenAI. Apple recently introduced a similar feature on its latest MacBooks enabling users to run AI models locally.

“Nevertheless, some AI-centric functions for CoPilot that are based on generative AI will necessitate cloud-based processing for activities like information retrieval, searching, or querying,” stated Shah. “Securing data, whether it is on the device, during transmission, or in the cloud, will present a significant challenge. This element will also be a crucial focus and distinguishing factor for companies such as Microsoft as compared to Apple within the PC industry.”
