An Australian citizen has been indicted for operating a fraudulent Wi-Fi connection point on a domestic flight with the intention to pilfer user credentials and data.
The individual, whose identity remains undisclosed and is 42 years old, is suspected to have created deceitful complimentary Wi-Fi networks, mirroring legitimate ones, which allowed him to intercept personal data from unsuspecting individuals who mistakenly connected to them, as reported by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated in a press release the previous week.
According to the enforcement agency, the accused was charged in May 2024 following an inquiry initiated a month earlier subsequent to an airline’s notification regarding a dubious Wi-Fi network identified by its staff during a domestic flight.
An inspection of his belongings on April 19 led to the confiscation of a portable wireless access device, a laptop, and a cellular phone. His apprehension took place on May 8 post the execution of a search warrant at his residence.
Reportedly, the individual orchestrated what is termed as an malignant sibling Wi-Fi offensive across various regions, encompassing domestic flights and terminals in Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide, to fake authentic Wi-Fi connections.
Individuals endeavoring to connect to the gratis, counterfeit network were instructed to input their email ID or social media credentials via a confined portal webpage.
“The email and password particulars harvested could potentially be utilized to gain entry to more personal information, such as an individual’s online conversations, stored images and videos, or banking details,” as per the AFP’s declaration.
The defendant has been accused on three charges of unauthorized hindrance of electronic communication and three charges of possession or dominance of data with the intent to perpetrate a grave crime.
Furthermore, he has been charged with one count of unauthorized access or modification of restricted data, one charge of deceitfully acquiring or transacting in personal financial particulars, and one count of possession of identification information. If found guilty, he confronts a potential maximum sentence of 23 years behind bars.
“In order to connect to a free Wi-Fi network, it should not necessitate disclosing any personal information — like logging in through an email or social media account,” remarked AFP’s West Command Cybercrime Detective Inspector Andrea Coleman.
